There’s a song I like to listen to occasionally because it reminds me of just how little I really know of God.
Feel free to read through the lyrics or just jump down to the link and listen to the song.

I made You a promise a thousand times
I tried to hear from heaven but I talked the whole time
I think I made You too small.
I never feared You at all.
If You touched my face would I know You?
Looked into my eyes, could I behold You?

I guess I thought that I had figured You out
I knew all the stories and I learned to talk about how You were might to save
But those were only empty words on a page
Then I caught a glimpse of who You might be
The slightest hint of You brought me down to my knees.

What do I know of You who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood but the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire?
Are You fury?
Are You sacred?
Are You beautiful?
What do I know of Holy?

What do I know of wounds that will heal my shame?
And a God who gave ‘life’ its name?
Of the One who the angels praise?
All creation knows Your Name
On earth and heaven above
What do I know of this love?

We get so comfortable with our christian terminology that we stop listening to what we’re really saying.  What do we truly know of God?  If we will spend all of eternity learning about Him and still never come to the end of Him, then right now I know so little of who He truly is.

What do we know of a God who can speak a universe into existence that is so big it has no end, and yet He still knows each and every star by name?  What do we know of a God Who this same universe praises constantly and knows His Name, and yet He has chosen to call me by name?  What do we know of a God Who wounds so that He might heal, Who judges and forgives, Who disciplines and pardons, Who loves and hates?

What do I know of holy?

Then I caught a glimpse of who You might be. The slightest hint of You brought me down to me knees
Never forget – He is God, and it will take more than eternity to figure out what that really means.
