Since most Churches will be taking Communion this Sunday this thought seemed appropriate
Ex 24:1,6 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel…. Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was something like a pavement…, as bright blue as the sky. But God did not raise His hand against these leaders of the Israelites, they saw God, and they ate and drank.”
In the middle east eating together is huge. Table fellowship is something that happens between friends, between people at peace with each other. You do not eat at an enemy’s table and you do not invite someone who has offended you to eat at your table. Table fellowship meant something and it still does today. Well, here in Exodus we get a picture of the leaders of Israel having table fellowship with Yhwh their God.
Now on Sunday many of us will celebrate communion. Today we don’t do a full meal together but the bread and drink are meant to symbolize a fuller meal. The Last Supper was just that – a meal – the Passover Feast. Unfortunately we tend to forget and overlook that aspect of Communion – you are eating at God’s table!
A huge part of the truth of communion is that bc God is able to save and does save- you now have peace with a Holy holy holy God! Bc of that you are able to eat and drink at His table. You are able to have table fellowship with the Lord of the Universe and just like in Exodus – He will not raise His hand against you. Even more amazing – not only our pastors, elders, church leaders, not only the theologians, but all of us the “comman man and woman” sitting in the pews/chairs are able to come and eat at the Lord’s table. We are invited and even commanded to come as a guest to the table of Yhwh the one true God.
What a feast one day in heaven as we sit with all the saints through the ages. Now we experience only in part then we shall experience table fellowship fully and completely. What an amazing thing. How great is our God!
