“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” Mt 6 – Jesus in the Sermon on the Mnt.
This verse was going through my mind awhile back. It sounds so trite to say “I’m storing up treasure for myself in heaven” and let’s face it, given a choice most people today would choose the earthly treasure over the heavenly one. Look at the way we live our lives. Where do the bulk of our finances go – to ourselves or to bless others and influence God’s kingdom? Where does the bulk of our time go? Focusing on what I like, what I want to do, what I “need” to do or do I spend my time focusing on building up God’s kingdom. I can tell you where the bulk of my treasures are at this moment – here.
Bry once made the statement “by storing up treasure for myself in heaven I’m preparing myself to enjoy heaven more.” Now, everyone in heaven will enjoy eternity with God. There’s no way for you not to enjoy it. However, maybe some people will enjoy it more bc they spent their time here preparing to live there…. storing up treasure for themselves in heaven.
By living with a God-centered mentality, a Kingdom of heaven mindset, by focusing on the eternal and not losing our perspective with the temporary we can prepare ourselves to enjoy heaven all the more. We’ll be there for all eternity, don’t you want to enjoy it as much as you can???
And what about our children or those we will one day leave behind? What kind of inheritance do we want to give them? I would love to be able to one day leave my children a million dollars but the fact is that probably won’t ever happen. (and even if I could that may not be the best thing for them) But what if I left my children with the idea that memorizing Scripture is incredibly important, that spending time in the Word of God is vital, and their relationship with Jesus is the most important thing? Not only do I want to prepare myself for eternity I want to begin preparing them as well.
May our treasures in heaven be abundant and may we teach those we leave behind to live the same….
