In Biblical times when it was known that a king was coming to visit a city that city was responsible to make the road smooth for the king. Potholes you would fill in, trees in the way you’d cut down. You’d make this dirt path leading up to your city as smooth as possible both in honor of the king and to let him know that he was welcome there.
Isaiah 40 starts with this thought “in the desert prepare the way for the LORD. Make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.”
In other words, so great is the Lord God the King of all kings that when He comes there’s no way we can prepare a road for Him – He must prepare His own way. Smoothing out a road isn’t good enough. Mountains must be leveled. Valleys must be raised. This is His road. The earth itself must be changed to make way for this King and it’s something only He can do.
Have you ever thought about the fact that this same King who levels mountains when He comes desires to come meet with you? He wants to meet with His children. He delights in your presence and He wants you to delight in His. How hungry are you today for the presence of the Lord God? How much do you long to see Him? I can tell you honestly, whatever longing you have falls way short of how much you will have once you finally see Him.
May the King of the Universe have an overwhelming mercy for us and pour out His grace on us. May the Exalted One come in our midst, may He be pleased by our worship of Him. And may His Spirit so overwhelm us that there is nothing left but a great longing for more of the Holy One of Israel, Yhwh is His Name.
