We get so use to hearing the story that we sometimes forget how crazy it must sound to those who have never heard it before. God coming down to earth and becoming… a baby? What God, why, and who cares are some honest questions people are asking right now. And how are we to respond?

For starters… the God that came in the flesh is the one true God, King of kings and Lord of lords. High king over all high kings (to quote CS Lewis). The God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Yhwh, the great I AM, the One who was and is and is to come. The True and Faithful one, the Lord of heaven and earth, Creator of all things, Sustainer of all things, the ultimate Promise Maker and Promise Keeper are just a few answers we could give.

And as for why…
bc God made a promise a long time ago at the very beginning that the seed of a woman would come and crush the head of the serpent.
Bc God declared to a man named Abraham that his offspring would one day outnumber the stars in the sky.
Bc God told His people Israel that He would send them another prophet, The Prophet who would be “like unto Moses.”
Bc God made a covenant with a king named David that his throne (David’s throne) would last forever bc one of his offspring would be king forever.
Bc God made many promises and predicted a Messiah would come and God Always Keeps His Word.

And as for who cares, well I don’t know about you but I think anytime God decides to come down and take on flesh it’s a big deal. Anytime God decides to walk among His people it’s amazing and mercy and grace beyond compare. And whether you believe it or not your eternity was hanging in the balance while the Son of God hung on a cross. The birth of Jesus means that the God we serve is a Covenant making and Covenant keeping God and that means our salvation is secure.

May we never grow too old to experience the wonder, too smart to appreciate the miracle, may we never get so use to the birth of our Savior that we stop being awed by Emmanuel, God with us.
